Weekends are for Wine, Movies and Doctor Who

Sunday - Wine O'Clock

I think we’re becoming connoisseurs of inexpensive Shiraz wine. This has been the ‘Year of Shiraz’ in our household. It all started last Christmas when we were at friends for the Holidays and our hosts had lots of wine, but the Shiraz seemed the clear winner. So I bought some for our Saturday movie nights at home and have been ever since.

There’s a Shiraz up at the nearest bottle shop that’s a clearskin named ‘Big and Bold’, made in South Eastern Australia, and really not a bad drop. I’ve been trying to keep it in stock here at home for weekends when we have Saturday movie nights and Sunday Doctor Who marathons.

I’ve also experimented with a $9 cask of Shiraz by Lachlan Ridge, which was so good we finished it in one night. On the same day, I found some Shiraz Cabernet and bought a bottle but it’s still waiting in the wings to try this coming weekend. If we like it, we’ll probably try the cask version by De Bortoli.

“Drink wine. This is life eternal. This is all that youth will give you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” – Omar Khayyám

I ordered a ‘Mystery’ Shiraz from OO.com.au a couple months ago and it ended up being a 5-star $25 a bottle Zonte’s Footstep Baron Von Nemesis, which was fantastic. My only problem with it is I could only enjoy one bottle with Rod instead of two because if I had more than a couple of glasses it gave me hives. (Not fair!) We paid $10 a bottle and it was worth it, but I supplemented it with $5 bottles of Big and Bold to avoid the whole allergy thing. (Sacrilege, I know).

Today I just ordered another case of 12 bottles, but this time it’s a bit cheaper. With a $5 discount, 25% off shipping and etc, I paid $53 including shipping. That’s about $4.63 a bottle. Cheaper than I can find it at the bottle shop up the road – and it’ll be delivered to the door. This was Berton Vineyard `Odd Socks` Shiraz 2013. We look forward to giving it a go once it arrives.

Life is short and we really should enjoy more of it. It seems for a long time we had a glass of wine only on rare occasions and special events. Well phooey on that. It’s time we spend our weekends relaxing and enjoying life.

15Sep22 I bought a rotisserie chicken for a quick dinner and then a day or so later made some very nice chicken soup with the carcass and breast meat leftover. I cooked the noodles separately in some of the broth I took from the soup and then just put them in my bowl. There was a lot of chicken on that little bird! I still have the other breast, all shredded and ready for a couple meals in the future. Not bad - 5 meals out of a $10 hot chicken! #2022pad #cooking #cookingforone #chickensoup #rotisseriechicken #yum
12Sep22 Once upon a time I used to take 12 pictures on the 12th day of the month. Lately all I manage is one or two. Aside from the photo being crooked, I think my desk looks pretty nice these days. My monitor is right on the desk. I've found this is the most comfortable position for it, and I still have issues with neck pain and not seeing clearly but both those things, as much as they affect my working life and enjoyment of my computer, are not caused from the monitor or the height. #2022pad #12of12 #computer #desk
11Sep22 Neurmal has a style all her own. She looks grumpy with a resting b*tch face, but is the sweetest cat I've ever known. She doesn't bite, she only scratches the side of my bed *!!) and her scratching posts. She waits, ever so patiently in the mornings until I drag myself out of bed, and only THEN does she meow like a crazed hungry kitty waiting for her food. She makes biscuits on the floor (kneads the floor with her paws) while meowing for her food so it can look like she stamping her feet impatiently. Which makes me laugh, and in the mornings - that's really amazing for me. She has taken over as the only cat in this villiage and takes her patroling duties seriously. Plus, she's my gym advisor and tells me when I'm slacking off. #cf22 #style #catsofinstagram #catstyle #softkitty
18Jan22 Oh ick. I am NOT showing you what the porch light looked like. Cleaning the porch and porch light were not my job and wasn't something I even thought about over the last 3yrs. Until it started looking like this. The blackness is from the dust and dirt across the road (where there's a large horse paddock). When the wind comes from that direction, even with the windows closed I get a film of dust and dirt over everything. And obviously cobwebs are not immune from it. So I took a couple cleaning brushes with extensions on them and tackled this area as well as the porch light. Rod used to bring the globe around the light into the house and wash it. I can't do that. I'm not safe on ladders. So I'll just get it to be less scary looking and call it good. Before I tackled this job, the area was sprayed with my favourite spider killer. Were spiders hurt? Geez, I hope so. And I hope they stay away for a long time. #dirt #cobwebs #porchcleaning #eww #spiders #latergram
28Jan22 Sometimes Neurmal has a hard time staying awake when she first wakes up and dozes off even with her head still up. Such a cutie. #catsofinstagram #sleepingkitty #latergram
20Feb22 I was searching for something to make for my Sunday dinner that was a bit different. This was different! This was roasted sweet potatoes covered with prawns and then a fancy Piri Piri topping. It was stunning. I found the recipe at New Idea Food (17 April 2019) - "Sweet Jacket Potato with Piri-Piri Prawns" and the recipe was actually for one person. It turned out amazing. #2022pad #cooking #cookingforone #sundayprawns
